Freixenet

Freixenet is one of Spain’s most iconic sparkling wine producers and the global leader in Cava, the country’s traditional method sparkling wine. The brand’s history goes back to the late 19th century, when two winemaking families, the Ferrers and the Salas, came together through marriage. In 1914, they officially launched Freixenet, taking its name from the family estate “La Freixeneda,” meaning “place of ash trees” in Catalan. From its base in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, in the heart of Catalonia’s Penedès region, Freixenet began producing sparkling wines that would soon become synonymous with Spanish celebration.

The company built its reputation on crafting Cava in the traditional Champagne method, where secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle to create natural bubbles. Freixenet became famous for its consistency, approachability, and ability to deliver high quality at an accessible price point. Its most iconic release, Cordon Negro—nicknamed the “Black Bottle”—debuted in 1974 and quickly became one of the world’s best-selling sparkling wines. The sleek matte-black bottle gave it instant recognition and helped establish Freixenet as a household name far beyond Spain.

What has distinguished Freixenet is its combination of scale and craftsmanship. Despite being the largest Cava producer, it continues to source fruit from vineyards across Penedès that are well-suited to native varieties like Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarel·lo. Over the years, Freixenet has also expanded its range, introducing rosé Cavas, vintage bottlings, and collaborations with still wines and international sparkling wine projects.

As a brand, Freixenet embodies the idea of sparkling wine as something democratic and joyful. It helped move sparkling wine out of the realm of luxury only and into the everyday lives of people who wanted to celebrate not just major milestones but also simple moments. Today, it remains one of the most recognized wine brands worldwide, a symbol of Spanish tradition blended with global vision. Freixenet continues to represent celebration, accessibility, and the enduring charm of bubbles in a glass.
