Gundlach Bundschu

Gundlach Bundschu is California’s oldest continuously family-owned winery, a true piece of Sonoma history that has been operating since 1858. Founded by Jacob Gundlach, a German immigrant who planted vines on what became known as Rhinefarm, the estate later joined with the Bundschu family through marriage, creating the name that endures today. Now run by the sixth generation of the Bundschu family, it stands as a rare example of continuity in an industry where many historic wineries have changed hands.

The estate sits on the western edge of the Sonoma Valley, where the Mayacamas Mountains influence the climate with cooling breezes and varied soils. This location allows Gundlach Bundschu to produce wines that balance ripeness with structure, capturing both the warmth of California and the elegance that comes from cooler conditions. The 320-acre Rhinefarm Vineyard remains at the heart of their production, yielding a diverse range of varietals.

Cabernet Sauvignon has long been a flagship for the winery, showcasing the depth and power that Sonoma fruit can achieve while retaining balance. Gundlach Bundschu is also well regarded for its Merlot, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer, a nod to its German heritage. Across the portfolio, the wines are crafted to express both varietal character and a sense of place, with an emphasis on approachability, food-friendliness, and authenticity.

As a brand, Gundlach Bundschu has embraced both tradition and a modern, slightly playful spirit. While deeply proud of its heritage, it also positions itself as approachable and community-oriented, often hosting music events, gatherings, and experiences that go beyond wine tasting. It represents the marriage of legacy and innovation—one of California’s historic wineries that continues to evolve while staying true to the values of family, land, and craftsmanship.
