Hofer

Hofer refers to H.u.M. Hofer, a family-run winery in the Weinviertel region of Austria. The estate is based in the village of Auersthal, just northeast of Vienna, where the gently rolling vineyards grow on loess soils that are well suited to fresh, expressive wines.

The winery has been active since the 1980s and is now firmly established as an organic producer, having gained certification in the early 2000s. Their philosophy is to let the vineyards speak with as little intervention as possible. In practice, that means low yields, hand work in the vines, and clean fermentations in stainless steel or neutral vessels.

Hofer’s most important grape is Grüner Veltliner, which they craft in a style that is crisp, mineral, and highly drinkable—very much the benchmark of Weinviertel. Alongside that, they produce Riesling, Welschriesling, and red wines like Zweigelt and St. Laurent, which lean toward light, fresh, and food-friendly styles rather than heavy oak aging.

As a brand, Hofer embodies clarity, authenticity, and integrity. Their wines are unpretentious but carefully made, showing the purity of Austria’s cool climate and the family’s commitment to sustainable farming. For many, Hofer represents exactly what makes Austrian wine appealing: precise, refreshing, honest bottles that are easy to enjoy but rooted in tradition and thoughtful craftsmanship.
