The 2019 Barolo has a pretty bouquet that is laced with light fruit, licorice and lots of blue flower. On the palate, the wine is mid-weight and lively. This is a nice expression of classic Nebbiolo that shows depth and elegance. It ferments with ambient yeasts and sees 40 days of extended maceration with submerged cap. This 29,400-bottle production represents a blend of fruit from seven sites: Altenasso and Solanotto in Castiglione Falletto, a part of Cerretta, the younger part of Bricco Voghera where the vines are from 55 to 60 years old, part of San Rocco, and Cerrati and Broglio in Serralunga d'Alba.

Azelia Barolo Margheria 2019 is a commanding single-vineyard Barolo from Serralunga d’Alba, a site known for wines of depth and longevity. It opens with aromas of red cherry, plum, and wild berries, interwoven with notes of rose petals, tar, licorice, and earthy spice. On the palate, it is powerful yet refined, delivering concentrated fruit layered with tobacco, leather, and mineral undertones. The tannins are firm but polished, balanced by lively acidity. The finish is long and complex, echoing fruit, spice, and savory earthiness, marking it as a wine built to evolve gracefully over decades.
Starter: Truffle risotto, porcini mushrooms, or beef carpaccio. Main Course: Osso buco, braised short ribs, roast lamb, or game meats. Cheese: Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, pecorino, or gorgonzola. Dessert: Hazelnut torte, dark chocolate truffles, or almond biscotti.

Azelia

Azelia is a family-run winery based in Castiglione Falletto, at the heart of Italy’s Barolo region in Piedmont. Founded in 1920 by Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino, the estate has been passed down through five generations, each building on a legacy of dedication to Nebbiolo and the terroir of the Langhe hills. Over the years, Azelia has grown from a small local producer into an internationally recognized name, while maintaining a strong commitment to tradition and authenticity.

The estate farms about 16 hectares of vineyards, many located in prestigious Barolo crus such as Bricco Fiasco, San Rocco, and Margheria. These sites, with their unique soils and exposures, allow Azelia to craft wines that showcase both the power and elegance of Nebbiolo. Old vines, some more than 80 years of age, are carefully tended to yield grapes of exceptional concentration and character.

In the cellar, Azelia balances classic winemaking with modern precision. Fermentations are managed to extract depth without losing finesse, and aging takes place in large oak casks and barriques, depending on the cuvée. Beyond Barolo, the winery also produces Dolcetto and Barbera, further reflecting Piedmont’s diversity. Today, Azelia remains a benchmark producer, uniting nearly a century of family tradition with wines that capture the essence of their land.
