Château Lafon-Rochet Saint-Estèphe 2018 is a Fourth Growth estate under the 1855 Classification, located on the gravelly hillsides of Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux’s Médoc. The 45-hectare vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller parcels of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, thriving on deep gravel over a clay-limestone base. This terroir provides both drainage and water retention, giving resilience in warmer vintages and contributing to the appellation’s characteristic structure and longevity.
The estate has embraced sustainable and organic vineyard management, with precise canopy work and careful parcel selection guiding the harvest. Grapes were picked at optimal maturity and underwent double sorting to ensure fruit purity. Fermentation took place in a mix of stainless steel and concrete vats, each parcel vinified separately to preserve terroir expression. Extraction was closely monitored, with pump-overs adjusted to balance concentration and finesse.
The 2018 vintage was aged in French oak barrels, a significant portion new, for around 18 months. This élevage integrates the firm tannic backbone typical of Saint-Estèphe with elegance and depth. Blending after aging emphasizes the power of Cabernet Sauvignon with the roundness of Merlot and the aromatic complexity of the supporting varieties. Château Lafon-Rochet’s approach combines tradition with modern precision, and the 2018 release reflects both the strength of its terroir and the disciplined craftsmanship of the estate.
