Taylor Small Batch is produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, and honors Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr., a pioneer whose influence on bourbon led to higher standards of quality and consistency throughout the industry. Taylor was instrumental in the passage of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, and this whiskey continues that legacy by adhering to the strict requirements of the designation.
The bourbon is made from a traditional mash bill of corn, rye, and malted barley, distilled in copper stills and aged in new, charred American oak barrels. Each batch is crafted by selecting a number of barrels that showcase balance and depth, marrying them together to create a consistent house style. All components are aged in historic warehouses built during Taylor’s time, where Kentucky’s climate—with its hot summers and cold winters—enhances interaction between spirit and oak.
As a Bottled-in-Bond release, Colonel E. H. Taylor Small Batch must come from a single distilling season, be aged for at least four years, and be bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). On the nose it opens with sweet corn and caramel, joined by layers of butterscotch, dried fruit, and toasted oak. There’s a clear backbone of spice—cinnamon, clove, and black pepper—balanced by vanilla cream and a faint herbal note. On the palate it is bold yet refined, with honeyed sweetness at the front, giving way to rich toffee, dark cherry, tobacco leaf, and roasted nuts. The 100-proof strength lends structure and warmth, while the finish is long and satisfying, leaving traces of oak spice, leather, and cocoa.
