Green Spot - Pot Still Whiskey is produced in the United States using a mash bill built around grains such as corn, rye, and malted barley. The mash is cooked and fermented before being distilled, often in copper column or pot stills.

Maturation takes place in new, charred American oak barrels, where seasonal temperature swings drive spirit deep into the wood, extracting color and complexity. Warehouse management and barrel selection are critical, with blenders assembling lots that best represent balance and structure.

The result is a whiskey shaped by grain, oak, and time, reflecting both traditional craft and rigorous quality control.

Green Spot

Green Spot is one of Ireland’s most beloved single pot still whiskeys, with a heritage that traces back to the 19th century. It was originally created by Mitchell & Son, a Dublin-based wine and spirits merchant established in 1805. The Mitchell family began buying whiskey in bulk from the nearby Jameson distillery and aging it themselves in wine and sherry casks. To keep track of different ages and styles in their warehouse, they marked the casks with colored paint spots—blue, red, yellow, and green—each representing a different age statement. Of those, Green Spot is the one that has endured as a classic expression, carrying with it the legacy of Dublin’s old whiskey-bonding tradition.

Today, Green Spot is produced at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork, the home of Jameson and many other Irish whiskeys, but it remains bottled and marketed by Mitchell & Son. It is a pure single pot still whiskey, a uniquely Irish style made from a mash of both malted and unmalted barley distilled in traditional copper pot stills. This gives it a creamy texture, vibrant fruit character, and a spicy backbone that sets it apart from lighter Irish blends.

The whiskey is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, which enhance its balance of orchard fruit, honey, and baking spice with subtle richness. Unlike many whiskies, Green Spot does not carry a specific age statement, but it is generally a mix of whiskeys aged between seven and ten years. This choice allows the brand to maintain consistency while preserving flexibility in blending.

As a brand, Green Spot represents both tradition and rarity. For decades it was nearly impossible to find outside Ireland, and even within the country it was produced in very limited quantities. In recent years, however, it has gained a global following, admired for its authenticity and as one of the few surviving “spot” whiskeys. To drink Green Spot is to taste a living piece of Irish whiskey history—creamy, vibrant, and deeply tied to the craft and culture of Dublin’s past.
