Opus One 2021 is a masterful expression of Napa Valley’s Bordeaux tradition, blending Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec. The vintage was shaped by dry growing conditions that led to lower yields but fruit of great intensity and character. After careful vinification, the wine was aged for nearly twenty months in new French oak, adding polish and subtle complexity without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
In the glass it opens with deep cassis, blackberry, and black cherry, accented by violet and a touch of vanilla. Layers of black tea, licorice, and dark chocolate emerge as it evolves, carried by fine, grained tannins that frame the wine with elegance and structure. The palate balances richness with freshness, leading into a finish that lingers gracefully with fruit, spice, and mineral tones.
Opus One 2021 pairs beautifully with refined and flavorful dishes. A herb-crusted rack of lamb or a grilled ribeye resonates with its dark fruit and oak spice, while roast duck with a berry reduction mirrors its brightness and depth. Earth-driven plates such as truffle risotto or wild mushroom ragout emphasize its complexity. For cheese, aged gouda or Gruyère provide a savory counterpoint, and dark chocolate desserts bring forward its mocha and cassis notes. This is a wine equally suited for immediate celebration or for cellaring to allow its layers to deepen over time.
